Hotel check: The Bolton Wellington

1 Dec 2007 by business traveller

WHAT'S IT LIKE? The entrance of this flat-iron shaped hotel is off the main road, which makes for a discrete arrival. The lobby, though small, was warm in feel; check in was swift and the staff friendly.

WHERE IS IT? In Wellington’s CBD, walking distance to the “Beehive” (as the parliament is called), office and shops.

HOW MANY ROOMS? 148 guestrooms, including 48 studios with or without kitchenettes, 94 one- and two-bedrooms suites with kitchenettes and 11 bedroom suites. There are also units for the physically challenged.

ROOM FACILITIES: My Premier Suite had a kitchenette, dining, sitting room and sleeping area comfortably delineated. Other highlights included a king-sized bed adorned with an elegant throw made from the softest material and designed to resemble kiwi bird feathers – an irresistible magnet to run one’s hand along, especially with the chill outside – high-speed internet access and hairdryer among others.

RESTAURANTS: Bisque on Bolton is manned by two of New Zealand’s best chefs – Stephen Morris (formerly of Huka Lodge) and Hemi Tahu (formerly of Wharekahau Lodge), who combine their talents to present Mediterranean Rim cuisine where NZ’s fresh produce takes centre stage. The wine list is expectedly dominated by labels sourced from the country’s famous wine-producing regions.

BARS: Brioche in the lobby.

BUSINESS FACILITIES: No business centre but the workstation next to the reception fulfilled our need to do quick email checks. This was complimentary to all guests. Two function rooms (one with natural lighting) take in 20 people for meetings and 30 for private dining.

LEISURE FACILITIES: Indoor heated lap pool, spa, sauna and gym.

PRICE: From US$185 for a three-night stay in mid-January.

VERDICT: Spankingly crisp and clean like the city.
