Hotel check: Royal Park Hotel Hongkong

WHAT’S IT LIKE? This 18-year-old recently emerged from a major refurbishment, unveiling an ultra-modern and sleek interior, most evident in the lobby that now allows in natural light. Other factors going for it are a massive shopping complex, a tranquil, leafy park and attractions like the Shingmun River, all nearby.

WHERE IS IT? In the New Territories’ hub of Shatin, next to the MTR station of the same name and New Town Plaza. Less than 30 minutes away is the Lowu border of Shenzhen. Shuttle buses depart hourly for Tsim Sha Tsui.

HOW MANY ROOMS? 443 newly refurbished rooms, including 12 contemporary One-Bedroom Suites. Accommodation such as the Deluxe Room is warm and spacious.

ROOM FACILITIES: Oversized beds, plasma LCD TVs, workdesks, minibars and broadband internet (US$13 for 24 hours). Suites boast DVD players and a second plasma LCD TV.

RESTAURANTS: Royal Park Chinese and Royal Park Chiu Chow Restaurants are popular with the locals; Sakurada serves Japanese; and 2+2 Café has a buffet.

BARS: One+One Bar features big-screen TVs.

BUSINESS FACILITIES: A 130-square-metre function room takes up to 100 people theatre style. Executive Room guests have access to the Upper Lounge.

LEISURE FACILITIES: Large indoor and outdoor pools with seasonal heating, well-equipped gym and sauna and spa (pictured).

PRICE: A Super Saver B&B package including an overnight in an Economy Room, complimentary breakfast for one, welcome fruit plate, newspaper and a 1400 check out starts from US$113 and is valid until July 18 and from September 22 to December 31. As the base of activities during the Olympic equestrian heat, the hotel is not taking bookings from July 21 to September 20. Only the Japanese and Chinese restaurants will remain open to the public.

VERDICT: A great weekend escape for local residents and for the business visitor, who like a serene environment to return to.
