Hotel Check: Howard Johnson All Suites Hotel

31 Mar 2006 by intern22

WHAT’S IT LIKE? A paean to the French impressionist master Monet whose dreamy gardens and landscapes adorn the public areas and guestrooms. As if that wasn’t enough, the hotel’s only restaurant is also named after him.

WHERE IS IT? On the quieter side of Yan’an Road and near to the Shanghai Film Centre. This should suit travellers who aren’t fussy about being in the centre of things.

HOW MANY ROOMS? 455 suites in five different categories from Superior to the premier HOJO Suite.

ROOM FACILITIES: In the Deluxe Suite, expect a big bed (it dwarfs the room), IDD telephone with data port, in-room safe, small but modern kitchen with microwave and coffee/tea maker. Broadband internet access was swift, except it kept shutting down after a few minutes of use.

RESTAURANTS: Just one – the Monet all-day dining outlet. Bag a seat in the glasshouse section, which brings the outdoors right to your table. Buffet or a la carte selections, it’s your choice.

BAR: It’s beside the all-day dining café.

BUSINESS FACILITIES: Small meeting rooms and work stations with broadband internet access are available at the business centre. Secretarial services can be requested.

FITNESS CENTRE: Gym is small but has adequate equipment.

VERDICT: Except for the loose broadband internet connection,my stay had hardly any kinks. The staff tried to please.

PRICE: A long-stay programme starts from US$1,604 and include perks such as discounted breakfast rate of US$11.20 and 10% off on laundry, meal consumption, transportation, business centre services and minibar items.
