Hotel Check: Hotel Mulia

What’s it like? More palazzo than an ordinary five-star hotel – note the preponderance of leopard prints and gold detailing. It is extremely well maintained that being nine years old hardly shows. Security is extra tight here, even more than is usual in Jakarta (due to previous bombing incidents). Guests must have their luggage opened up and examined by the guards before check in. I appreciated the guest relations executive remembering to show me the way to the fire escape before leading me to my room.

Where is it? In Senayan, one of Jakarta’s key districts. Beside it is the exclusive 18-hole Senayan Golf Course.

How many rooms? 996 guestrooms and suites.

Room facilities: High-speed broadband, dual lines with data port, voice mail, satellite and cable programming, ample work space, separate tub and shower, hairdryer and same day laundry and dry cleaning.

Restaurants: Five on the premises, each exhibiting a strong designer’s touch. The Café features international cuisine; Il Mare does Italian, Samudra Shark’s fin is Cantonese and seafood; Suki does Indonesian fusion and Thai-style steamboat, while Edogin is Japanese.

Bar: Cascade Lounge has quiet corners for small meetings and CJ’s rocks with music from a live band in the evenings.

Business facilities: The 24-hour business centre provides a boardroom and two smaller meeting rooms, plus a range of secretarial expertise. Those seeking a temporary base in Jakarta can choose from one of 10 private office suites, each measuring 48sq m. A PC and other technical aids are provided. The column-free Grand Ballroom is enormous at 2,500sq m and can fit 4,000 people – no wonder this is the favourite venue of the city's demi-monde who adore throwing huge and lavish bashes. Eight function rooms complete the inventory.

Leisure facilities: The 30-metre pool is ideal for practicing those laps. The spa is open from 0900 to 2200 and also provides in-room service.

Verdict: Service was impeccable and all the comforts and work tools a business traveller could ask for was provided.

PRICE: An Executive Business Package has room rates from US$138 and other perks.
