Tried & Tested

Hotel check: Hotel Hannong

29 Jun 2006 by Mark Caswell

WHAT'S IT LIKE? This boutique hotel was named after a family of porcelain makers, and some examples of their work can be viewed in reception. The hotel is situated on the site of the former porcelain factory, and is part of the Exclusive Hotels group.

WHERE IS IT? On L’Ile de Strasbourg (the centre of the city is enclosed by a river and was named a World Heritage site in 1988). It’s around five minutes’ walk from the city’s cathedral and main attractions, and roughly the same to the train station.

HOW MANY ROOMS? 72, of which 35 are standard, 27 are superior and 10 are deluxe.

ROOM FACILITIES Rooms are smart, with hardwood flooring throughout and bright fabric wall coverings. All rooms have air conditioning, flat-screen satellite TVs (showing mainly French and German channels), an empty fridge (but no tea and coffee facilities) and a large desk with high-speed internet access, charged at E15 for 24 hours. Views are of one of two quiet roads; there is relatively little traffic in the centre of Strasbourg as the majority of roads are pedestrianised. Bathrooms have a combined bath and shower, and Exclusive Hotels branded amenities. My deluxe room on the sixth floor was one of the more spacious available, with a king-sized and single bed, armchair, coffee table and chair, entrance hallway with extra cupboard space, and electric window shutters.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS The hotel has a small bar serving light snacks until midnight, as well as the glass-ceilinged Horn lounge. Breakfast is also served here, with a choice of croissants, pastries, cold meats, yoghurts, cereals and a small selection of cooked meats and scrambled eggs. Wifi internet access is available in the lobby and bar area at E5 for 20 minutes or E10 for one hour.

BUSINESS AND MEETING FACILITIES There are two meeting rooms, both with a capacity of 70 theatre-style, plus four breakout rooms holding up to 13. All rooms have air conditioning, natural daylight and wifi internet access. For groups of six or more delegates the hotel can organise leisure activities such as guided bicycle tours and wine-tasting expeditions.

VERDICT A quiet, well-equipped hotel with amiable staff, close to the city centre.

PRICE Internet rates for a standard room in early July were E114 for a standard room, E140 for a superior room and E182 for a deluxe.
