Easyjet trials “revolutionary” aircraft coating

14 Feb 2011 by BusinessTraveller
Low-cost carrier Easyjet is testing a revolutionary nano-technology coating on eight of its aircraft, aimed at reducing drag and saving fuel consumption. Easyjet says it is the first commercial airline to trial the coating, which is already used by US military aircraft. It works by bonding to the paint surface and reducing the build up of debris on the aircraft structure, which in turn reduces drag. The ultra-thin film is one micron (one millionth of a metre) thick, and adds only four ounces to the aircraft weight. Manufacturers TripleO estimate that it could reduce Easyjet’s fuel consumption by 1-2 per cent. The carrier is trialling the coating on eight aircraft, and will compare fuel consumption with the rest of the fleet over a twelve month period. For more information visit easyjet.com.
