India’s low-budget carrier, GoAir has been given permission to serve international routes.

As per the 0/20 rule, Indian airlines must have a fleet of 20 aircraft or deploy 20 per cent of their fleet capacity on domestic routes. GoAir received its 20th aircraft in June.

In July, GoAir proposed to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, a list of 14 countries with focus on Asia and the Middle East, as its choice of international destinations.

The government has given a nod to the airline to fly to Iran, China, Vietnam, Maldives, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

GoAir told Business Traveller India, “[No routes] have been decided yet. We have just been given the permission to fly overseas and our processors are evaluating feasible routes and frequencies. We need to consider factors such as market conditions, traffic and demand.”

The airline hopes to launch its international service by March 2017.
