M Social Singapore launches in the Lion City

6 May 2016 by Jeremy Tredinnick

Millennium Hotels and Resorts has launched a new lifestyle brand with the opening of M Social Singapore, a 293-room design hotel situated on the Singapore River overlooking Robertson Quay.

Part of an integrated development that includes luxury apartment project UP@Robertson Quay, the interior has been designed by Philippe Starck using a new concept of “democratic design”, whereby spaces around the hotel are accessible and flexible enough to cater to different needs. The theme is centred around being “snuggish”, and the hotel is targeting “Global citizens with a Millennial mindset”.

It is the first hotel in Singapore to offer a self-check-in kiosk in the lobby, and offers Handy smartphones – pre-loaded with city guides – in all rooms (local and international calls are free, and the phone can be taken out into the city and used as a wifi hotspot for your own devices).

The Nicer Room

The hotel group describes the new hotel brand thus: “M Social believes it is the real-life connections that really matter. Here, comfort and customisation rank high on the list of priorities, but in a setting that is casual and convivial, without stuffy hotel clichés and formalities.”

As part of its plan to offer a “lifestyle experience”, the hotel has created the M Social Committee: comprising local personalities such as Lim Sek (Music and Movement) and Timothy Go (TV presenter), it is responsible for creating a digital guide to attractions around Singapore that will appeal to millennial globetrotters, as well as arranging hotel activities such as morning tai chi sessions and yoga around the pool deck.

The Big Room

Guestrooms vary a lot in size and configuration, and sport names such as “The Big Room” and “The Bigger Room” – some with ceilings as high as 4.1 metres. The hotel’s restaurant-bar is called Beasts & Butterflies and offers a wide-ranging mix of food from East and West, as well as artisanal cocktails created by its mixologists.
