Air Europa launches new loyalty scheme

8 Feb 2016 by BusinessTraveller

Spanish carrier Air Europa has launched its new Suma frequent flyer programme.

Members earn two miles for every €1 spent on Air Europa flights, with miles earned on Skyteam partner services “based on the distance flown in miles”.

Members can also earn and redeem miles with non-airline partners including Europcar, NH Hotels and Amazon.

The carrier says that “Unlike other companies, Air Europa does not have a limited quota of seats on flights purchased with miles. If there is an empty seat, use your miles and book it.”

Examples of miles needed for flight redemptions include (from) 12,500 for an economy return flight from Madrid to London, and 29,483 from Madrid to New York.

Currently, new members receive 787 bonus miles on sign-up – the figure refers to the Boeing B787 aircraft which Air Europa operates (currently on a lease basis from LOT Polish, with its own Dreamliner fleet set to start being delivered this year).

There are four tier levels to the programme – Suma, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with Silver tiers and above enjoying benefits including business class check-in access, priority boarding and baggage, and one extra piece of checked luggage.

Gold and Platinum cardholders gets fast track security and lounge access, as well as a guaranteed seat on flights, and Platinum members benefit from business class upgrades subject to availability.

Silver members receive 50 per cent bonus miles on flight purchases, with Gold cardholders getting 75 per cent bonus and Platinum members 100 per cent.

Air Europa was previously a member of the Air France KLM-led Flying Blue scheme, and the carrier says that Flying Blue members can status match within the new Suma scheme.

As the Spanish carrier is still a Skyteam member, passengers on Air Europa can continue to opt to earn Flying Blue miles on their flights, but cannot earn both Suma and Flying Blue miles on the same flight.
