United amends Mileage Plus accrual rates

17 Dec 2015 by GrahamSmith

United Airlines has announced changes to its Mileage Plus programme which will enable first and business class customers to achieve premier status faster.

The Star Alliance member will be increasing its Premier Qualifying Miles (PQM) accrual rate from January 1 – up to double the current rate.

The modification will result in United matching the rates of American Airlines.

Following AA's announcement last month that its AAdvantage frequent flyer programme would shift to a revenue-based system next year (see news, November 18), the Oneworld carrier published revised 2016 Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) rates that are an improvement over those offered this year.

United does have the advantage, as the improved PQM accrual rates will be extended to flights operated by select Star Alliance joint venture partners.

AA's on the other hand only offers the extra EQM on its own flights.

The improved accrual rates will take effect at the start of 2016, regardless of the booking date. Mileage Plus members can book their flights now and enjoy the new rates on flights travelled next year.
