Peninsula Hotels’ plans for a London hotel near Hyde Park Corner have been approved by Westminster City Council.

The Peninsula London, which is scheduled to open in 2021, will be located at 1-5 Grosvenor Place in Belgravia.

The 190-room property will have a colonnade “linking to an internal ‘Palazzo-style’ courtyard”.

Facilities will include shops, bars, restaurants and a ballroom, as well as 24-28 residential apartments with a separate spa, reception and entrance.

Two years ago, Hong Kong-based Peninsula spent £132.5 million for a 50 per cent stake, alongside freeholder Grosvenor, to redevelop the west London site, formerly a 1960s office block (see news, June 2013). Peninsula’s parent company Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels bought the stake off Derwent.

The Peninsula London has been designed by Hopkins Architects.

Peninsula Hotels announced a redesign of the guestrooms in its Chicago property in September (see news, September 18).
