Onyx Hospitality Group, which has the hotel brands Amari and Ozo as well as serviced apartment brand Shama is expanding in Malaysia, with all three brands slated to open in Malaysia in 2016-17.
The first property to open will be the 242-room Amari Johor Bahru at the end of 2016, opening in the capital of the state of Johor at the southernmost tip of Malaysia.
Speaking with Business Traveller, chief executive Peter Henley said that the new property “is right next to the original first link with Singapore with great access into the trains and roads going into Singapore. It is one of the very few branded hotels opening in a city and a state, which is opening up very quickly to business.”
Henley said that the Amari would be the first of several projects in Malaysia, including the 135-room Ozo Penang – due to open in early 2017.
“Then at the other end of the Johor state from the Amari is an area called Medini, which is big on film making but also attractive to corporate clients, and there in 2018 we are opening the Shama Medini and Ozo Medini in the UMCity Medini Lakeside Complex with 232 rooms and 198 rooms, respectively.”
Onyx currently has a portfolio of 59 properties, including 20 in development, and is aiming for 81 hotels, resorts and serviced apartments to be open by 2018.
