Singapore Airlines (SIA) celebrated the launch of its new premium economy product yesterday, coinciding with the nation’s 50th anniversary.
Passengers on Flight SQ231, operated by a B777-300ER, were first to experience the new cabin class as it took off from Singapore Changi Airport at 0045 and landed in Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport just after 1000.
This was followed later in the evening by flight SQ221, an A380 that departed Singapore at 2015 and arrived in Sydney at 0555.
SIA executive vice president commercial, Mak Swee Wah, tests premium economy
SIA is rolling out premium economy quickly across its fleet of A380s and B777-300ERs, and is scheduled to launch the cabin class on flights to Hong Kong and London later this month, with Beijing, Shanghai, Frankfurt and Paris to follow in September.
While originally slated for an August 28 rollout alongside London, an SIA spokesperson told Business Traveller Asia-Pacific that the Hong Kong launch was pushed forward to August 12.
Reservations for the Hong Kong flights are now reflected on the SIA online booking platform.
Premium economy seat
Once fitted with the new product, the A380s will feature 36 premium economy seats all located on the lower deck of the superjumbo, while the B777-300ERs will offer 28 seats.
SIA has priced premium economy competitively, and the majority of fares cost just slightly more than the carrier's "Flexi" economy class rates. There is also an SG50 deal offering upgrades to premium economy at attractive prices, available from now until the end of the year (see here).
