Seoul announces new MICE incentives

7 Aug 2015 by Clement Huang

Seoul’s mayor Park Won Soon has launched a series of programmes that will help showcase the South Korean capital as a MICE and tourism destination.

During the Seoul MICE Beijing Road Show earlier this week, Park announced that business events with 50 or more delegates staying two consecutive nights can apply for either, complimentary seats at the Seoul Mega Concert, a K-Pop concert in Seoul City Hall plaza, or the Seoul International Fireworks Festival, which will both be held in early October.

Meanwhile, for events taking place through to June 2016, organisers can opt for packages containing KRW10,000 (US$8) food credit per person, a coach for a city tour, and up to KRW3 million (US$2,567) towards tickets for an entertainment performance in Seoul.

Deadline for applications is September 30 for both measures and inquiries can be made through [email protected]. Both new measures complement Seoul’s business event support programme, which has recently relaxed restrictions to make qualifying easier for promotional and on-site support programmes and services.

Seoul has been hit hard by the recent MERS outbreak in the city, which has stalled the country’s economy. The number of foreign visitors to South Korea dropped by more than 40 per cent in June compared with last year’s figures, falling a further 60 per cent by the middle of July.

Since the country was declared MERS free, a 100-day Tourism Recovery Plan is now underway to attract international visitors back to South Korea and stimulate appeal for inbound groups.
