First Look: JW Marriott Hotel Macau

28 May 2015 by Clement Huang
This hotel is Asia’s largest JW Marriott, offering 944 rooms and 71 suites over 18 floors that also include a grand ballroom and six meeting rooms for over 2,700 sqm of total meeting space. Kids Club A fitness centre, pool area and Kid’s Club provide the accent on leisure, along with access to Galaxy Macau’s Grand Resort Deck, which features the world’s longest skytop aquatic adventure ride, and the largest skytop wave pool and white sand beach, among other attractions. Décor Grand staircase Elegant neutrals offset by dark bronzes, and subtle gold and pale yellow lighting, make for warmth despite the large spaces in this hotel. Backlit panels of polished agate create a wonderful effect, as do occasional splashes of vivid colour, evident in the skylight art of pink glass panels above the lobby’s grand staircase. The external corridors, alcoves and lobby areas continue with the subdued feel. Rooms The rooms are elegantly appointed. Dark wood tones mix with bronze and polished copper fittings to offset neutral wall tones and warm gold lighting highlighted on one side by an attractive watercolour and on the other, behind a comfortable bed, by a backlit panel of sliced marble. Guestroom A floor to ceiling window shows the Galaxy resort in all its glister, and at night the ensuing lightshow is worth watching from bed, ignoring the 55-inch LCD screen TV. The bathroom contains a bathtub and separate walk-in shower, along with smart glass for the modest, and a toilet with hi-tech bowl that a little creepily remains lit at night to guide you in. A control panel explaining by diagram the features of this marvel of tech remains nonetheless puzzling in the use. Bathroom  Other features included a wardrobe accessible from either hall or bathroom, elegant coffee bar, comfy L-shaped lounge with small table suitable for room service meals, and a working desk complete with full connectivity, conventional power and USB points and a good old-fashioned telephone. An easy to follow tech guide for the room’s many features (alarm clock with bluetooth, phone with hard to read instructions) was not available, but may be something management would like to consider. Meetings and Events The Grand Ballroom can take up to 1,600 guests in its 1,920 sqm of space with ground-level access. Six other meeting rooms are available for smaller gatherings, with space ranging from 26 sqm to 270 sqm. The hotel allocates a dedicated manager for every event. Other services include PA and video systems, a simultaneous multi-lingual interpretation system, and special effects lighting for stage shows. Food and Beverage Man Ho Chinese Restaurant entrance Urban Kitchen on the first floor offers an all-day semi-buffet showcasing regional and international cuisines and made to order options. Man Ho Chinese Restaurant, also on the first floor, offers classic Cantonese cuisine. The Pool Bar has light meals and snacks available, while the Lounge Bar offers comfort food, afternoon tea, beverages and cocktails. Transport and Accessibility Galaxy Macau Resort Located on the Cotai Strip in Macau’s Galaxy Macau Resort, there are frequent free shuttles from ferry and airport facilities, and ample taxi services. Other Features Worth Mentioning The fitness centre has a well equipped workout room with professional and helpful staff. The Kid’s Club likewise has a well thought out space for physical activity and also for sit down fun with drawing and puzzles. Room features much appreciated were an ironing board with good-quality iron, and ample disposable vanity extras in the bathroom. Conclusion JW Marriott Hotel Macau has provided the fun for its tourist market but also kept a sophisticated edge that would not be lost on the MICE guest or business traveller. The workdesk and associated connectivity within the room are welcome inclusions. For more information, visit marriott.com John Church
