China will soon have its very first shopping mall with baggage check-in services. The RMB8 billion (US$1.3 billion) project is being developed by Hong Kong company Shui On Land.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the new development will be located in Shanghai’s Hongqiao business district (directly next to Hongqiao International Airport), and will also feature terminals for high-speed train and other subway services.
Similar to the in-town check-in facilities at Hong Kong’s International Finance Centre, the Shanghai mall allows passengers to check their baggage and receive their boarding passes before proceeding to the airport.
Thomas Tam, executive director of China Xintiandi, the commercial arm of Shui On Land, told the SCMP that the development of the project was a complicated one due to the strict security requirements imposed by Hongqiao International Airport.
At launch, the check-in services will be initially restricted to domestic flights operated by China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines. The two carriers have approved the installation of eight check-in counters at the mall, the report said.
