Six airlines that have apps for the Apple Watch

13 May 2015 by Clement Huang

DELTA AIR LINES

RELEASE DATE April 24, 2015

HIGHLIGHT The Delta app for the Apple Watch takes advantage of the device’s push notifications capabilities, and provides users with important flight status information. Given the unpredictable weather during the winter months in the US, this would prove to be extremely useful for customers to check if their flights have been cancelled or delayed!

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT Simple but uncompromising in quality are key traits of the Delta app. Customers can look forward to receiving their eBoarding passes directly on their wrists, and even receive a countdown to their boarding time. Upon approaching a destination city, the app will notify customers and provide information about the baggage carousel.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES

RELEASE DATE April 28, 2015

HIGHLIGHT Users should keep an eye out for Glance View, which incorporates trip reminders with other important information such as when counters are ready for check-in.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT Given that the old Singapore Airlines mobile app was dated, we like the carrier's efforts to improve customers’ experience across digital touchpoints. The Apple Watch app is intuitive and simple, which makes it perfect for the small screen of the device. We love the city background on the app, which reflects each traveller's upcoming destination.

EMIRATES

RELEASE DATE March 17, 2015

HIGHLIGHT Designed to work in harmony with the airline's existing iPhone app, the watch application is fully compatible with Apple Passbook, meaning users can receive their e-boarding passes straight onto their watch.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT As the first airline in the Middle East and African region to offer an Apple Watch app, Emirates has a lot to prove. Luckily, it delivers admirably. Not only does the app support three languages – English, French and German – but it also provides a comprehensive list of useful functions, including push notifications, in the event of gate number and baggage belt changes, as well as a review list of all upcoming trips. The app also delivers up-to-date flight information, including terminal, gate number, flight status, and baggage collection details.

AIR NEW ZEALAND

RELEASE DATE April 24, 2015

HIGHLIGHT As with the carrier's own mobile app, which it launched in 2014, the Air NZ Apple Watch application features a coffee ordering function. It automatically invites customers to order their coffee whenever they enter the carrier's lounge in New Zealand, and alerts them when the coffee is ready to be picked up at the barista station.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT The coffee ordering function is truly one of a kind, but there is also plenty more to love about the Apple Watch app. Boarding calls can be received directly as a notification on the watch, meaning users can get to their gates on time.

AMERICAN AIRLINES

RELEASE DATE April 24, 2015

HIGHLIGHT For many travellers, being able to see the progress of one's flight path can be comforting. Most modern carriers offer this functionality on their IFE systems, but it comes at the expense of watching movies or TV shows. AA's Apple Watch app allows users to view a map of their flight on their wrist, along with the time remaining until arrival.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT Not only does the app provide details about point-to-point travel, it also covers connection flights! Users can simply enter either their frequent flyer account details or the booking reference of their travel itinerary to receive a list of notifications of their connecting flights as well. In addition, regular AA patrons will note that the carrier divides passengers into different boarding groups, whereby premium or high-tier customers are afforded priority boarding privileges. The app provides details on the group to which the user has been designated, making boarding stress-free.

BRITISH AIRWAYS

RELEASE DATE April 24, 2015

HIGHLIGHT One of the great things about BA is it has developed not one, but two individual apps for the Apple Watch. Along with the standard BA application, the carrier has introduced a separate app for Avios, its travel rewards currency. As one of the first European loyalty programme apps for Apple's newest device, the software allows members to keep track of their points, and notifies them periodically when their balance increases.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT One of the nifty additions of the BA Apple Watch app is that it provides accurate weather information of the user's destination. For those visiting the BA lounge at Heathrow Terminal 5, the app will sense their location and deliver iBeacon powered welcome messages. Much app-reciated!
