Cathay Pacific receives 50th B777-300ER

5 May 2015 by Clement Huang

Cathay Pacific Airways (CX) has taken delivery of its 50th B777-300ER. The Hong Kong-based carrier’s fleet now boasts a total of 67 B777s that also includes 12 B777-300s (non extended range model), and five B777-200s.

In celebration of the delivery, the new aircraft features a special decal with the imprint “Our 50th B777-300ER”.

“The 777-300ER forms the backbone of our long-haul fleet," said Ivan Chu, chief executive, CX. "We operate the largest 777-300ER fleet in Asia, and this super-efficient long haul aircraft allows us to operate multiple daily frequencies to intercontinental markets, which gives our customers a lot of choices”.

Chu’s latest statement about providing attractive daily frequencies reinforces the company’s long-standing strategy that has resulted in the airline favouring stretched single-deck twin-engine aircraft such as the B777-300ER over the likes of the larger A380 and B747-8.

Part of the appeal of the B777-300ER is its highly touted fuel efficiency, making it the most cost-efficient airplane of its class in the world. Boeing intends to implement further improvements to the model in 2016 that will reduce fuel use by another two per cent.

This underlines CX’s business model, which prioritises efficiency over capacity. The carrier also has an existing order for 48 A350s from Airbus – itself a highly fuel-efficient aircraft too.

As one of Boeing’s largest customers here in Asia-Pacific, CX is looking to continue its partnership with the US aircraft manufacturer. The airline still has a further three B777-300ERs, and is poised to be the first Asian customer for the next generation B777-9X, with deliveries expected to commence by 2021.

"We truly value the confidence CX have demonstrated in the 777 program as well as Boeing's products and services across the board," said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of sales for Northeast Asia, Boeing. "We are honoured that the 777-300ER continues to play a prominent role in the success of CX's business expansion and we look forward to expanding our partnership with the new 777X in the years to come".
