United ups its inflight dining game

22 Jan 2015 by Clement Huang

As part of an ongoing multimillion dollar investment to upgrade its inflight catering, United Airlines (United) will be expanding its premium cabin food service from next month. Changes will include extending the meal service to North America flights as short as two hours and 20 minutes.

A new menu of entrees has also been created by United’s team of chefs, who drew inspiration from the cuisine offered in the airline’s hub cities. Premium passengers can look forward to new dining choices such as cage-free scrambled eggs prepared skillet style with pepper-jack cheese, sauteed pepper mix, sliced New Mexico sausage, potato gratin and fire-roasted pepper sauce; lobster macaroni and cheese with a baked crumb topping and side of broccoli; and chicken and sausage jambalaya with white rice and green onions.

Other changes include:

  • New breakfast breads for short flights in the morning, along with a rotation of 25 different snacks during the afternoon and evening.
  • Three entrée choices (up from the existing two) for customers travelling on flights between four hours to five fours and 19 minutes.
  • New multi-course meal service on transcontinental and Hawaii flights, featuring exciting entrees such as tamale-stuffed chicken wrapped in a corn husk and served with creamy corn sauce, roasted red and yellow tomatoes and yucca sticks, followed by sorbet during lunch, or gelato or ice cream for dinner.

"Our customers tell us they want greater options and fresh, savoury dining choices when they fly with us," said Lynda Coffman, United's vice president of food services. "With these latest enhancements, we will offer restaurant-quality cuisine that enriches their inflight experience."
