Dalian building world’s largest offshore airport

16 Jan 2015
Construction on the new Dalian Jinzhou Bay Airport is underway. The US$4.3 billion development is expected to become the world’s largest airport built on an artificial island. Photo Courtesy of: Baidu, dlskyscrapers.sd6d.com The new airport will be serving Dalian, a city located in the southern Liaoning Province, and surrounding areas. Operations at the current Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport have reportedly reached capacity, with predictions that the single-runway airport will be overloaded by 2016. As space is limited around this major Chinese city, expanding the existing airport or building a new land-based airport is untenable and an offshore site was identified as the best option. This will mean Dalian Jinzhou Bay Airport will join the likes of Hong Kong International and Kansai International Airport, which have also been built largely on reclaimed land. The 20.9sq km island development will include a 200,000sqm terminal and four runways, which will be able to handle A380s to land and take off. Land reclamation for the project began in 2012, with the entire project due for completion in 2018. Further information about the proposed airport remains a closely guarded secret. When Business Traveller Asia-Pacific contacted the airport, chief officer Mr Fu refused to confirm any details: “We have not released anything to the media. If we do, we will let you know.” dlairport.com Valerian Ho From a battleground to industrial boomtown. Business Traveller tours Dalian
