Air China and Air New Zealand (ANZ) have signed a statement of intent that would see the Chinese carrier launch a direct link between Beijing and Auckland for the first time since 2012.
The proposed strategic alliance would improve connections for travel between the two countries and lead to a higher frequency of flights. Furthermore, as both carriers are members of Star Alliance, frequent flyer customers of both airlines would enjoy reciprocal benefits.
According to Christopher Luxon, chief executive of ANZ, China represents the second largest inbound traveller market for New Zealand, and he believes that interest will continue to grow in the years to come.
While ANZ used to offer a twice-weekly Auckland to Beijing service, the carrier was forced to cancel it due to weak performance and heavy losses on the route. Instead, it decided to consolidate its entire efforts in China to Shanghai.
Full details for the partnership, including flight frequency and the operating aircraft remain under wraps, but will be revealed early next year when both carriers receive the necessary regulatory approval.
