SPG unveils mobile, keyless room entry service

5 Nov 2014 by Clement Huang

Don't you hate it when you lose your hotel key and have to sheepishly ask at the front desk for another? Well, Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) has just launched a new service that could make all the difference!

SPG Keyless is the hospitality industry’s first mobile, keyless entry system that allows guests to use their smartphones as their hotel key. The service will be rolled out in the coming months to Aloft, Element and W branded hotels around the world.

So how does it work? SPG members will first have to register their smartphones through the SPG App and allow push notifications. Following a successful reservation at an eligible hotel, they will then be invited to opt-in for the SPG Keyless service.

Guests will receive a push notification stating that they have successfully checked in and been assigned a room number. Upon arrival at the hotel, they can then skip the front desk completely, and head directly to their rooms.

By enabling Bluetooth on their smartphones, guests can simply open the SPG App, and hold their mobile device on the door lock. A green light will indicate that entry has been granted, and they can then enter their rooms.

Compatible mobile devices include the iPhone 4S and above, running the latest iOS8, as well as selected Android devices running Flavour 4.3 and above. The SPG app is also required.

The service is currently available at the following hotels: Aloft Beijing, Aloft Cancun, Aloft Cupertino, Aloft Harlem, W Doha, W Hollywood, W Hong Kong, W New York-Downtown, W Singapore and Element Times Square.
