Five travel apps that we highly recommend

29 Oct 2014 by Clement Huang

TRIPIT TRAVEL ORGANISER

COST Free (with ads)

PLATFORM iOS, Android

WHY WE RECOMMEND IT For those of us who fly around regularly, keeping track of our flights can be a chore. Certainly the act of storing 10 travel itineraries in a binder can be a daunting task! Tripit Travel Organiser will help you to store all of your travel plans in a single app. No paper… no hassle!

ONAVO EXTEND

COST Free

PLATFORM iOS, Android

WHY WE RECOMMEND IT This free app works like magic to help you keep your data usage to a minimum! By compressing your mobile data, Onavo Extend claims it can “increase the power of [your] data plan by up to 500 per cent”. We’ve tested it and results have been promising too! The best part is that it provides users with monthly reports to help you understand where you’re using your data. It’s not just web-browsing that drains those precious megabytes, you know!

WORLD LENS

COST Free (language packs normally cost US$4.99, but are currently available for free)

PLATFORM iOS, Android, Google Glass

WHY WE RECOMMEND IT Some of us are shamefully monolingual, but when we have a free app like World Lens, do we really need to pick up another language? By simply using the in-built camera of any iOS or Android device, the app detects foreign words and automatically translate them to English, or vice versa. It’s so good that Google is supporting the app on its Google Glass – now that’s a cool way of translating on the go!

SEASONAL CITIES

COST Free

PLATFORM iOS, Android

WHY WE RECOMMEND IT No matter how much most of us travel around, we all know that there are always more seasoned travellers out there. So if we can’t be them, why not learn from them? Seasonal Cities is a cool app that offers travel guides that rotate every season – roughly once every three months! Guides are written by leading travel journalists who reside in the cities themselves.
