United to launch four new Pacific routes next week

28 Oct 2014 by Tamsin Cocks

United Airlines will launch four new Pacific routes next week. The American carrier will first begin flying non-stop between Los Angeles and Melbourne, along with San Francisco and Haneda on October 26. It will also launch two new routes from its Guam hub to Seoul on October 27, and Shanghai the day after.

"New nonstop service to Melbourne and Haneda from our powerhouse West Coast hubs, and the additional new flights from our Guam hub to both Seoul and Shanghai, offer our customers convenience and schedule options that no other airline can offer," said Brian Znotins, United’s vice president of network.

Los Angeles – Melbourne

Flights to the Australian city will be served six-times-weekly with United’s new Boeing 787-9 aircraft. The service will be the longest Dreamliner route in the world to date, and is made possible due to the aircraft’s extended range – 8,550 miles as compared to the 8,200 offered by the smaller B787-8 variant.

The B787-9 is configured in a two-class layout, consisting of 48 in BusinessFirst, and 204 in economy, including 88 Economy Plus seats that offer added legroom.

Flight UA98 departs Los Angeles at 2230 and arrives in Melbourne at 0815 two days later. The return service UA99 takes off from Melbourne at 1015 and touches back down in Los Angeles at 0650.

San Francisco – Haneda

Daily flights to Tokyo’s second airport will complement United’s existing service between San Francisco and Narita International Airport. Flight UA875 departs San Francisco International Airport (SFO) at 1835, and arrives at Haneda Airport at 2205 the following day. The return flight sees UA876 leave Japan at 0005, before arriving back in SFO at 1815 the previous day.

Guam to Seoul and Shanghai

United will serve the capital of South Korea daily through its Guam hub at A.P. Won Pat International Airport, while flying to Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport twice weekly. The latter will represent the first non-stop service between Guam and mainland China.

The US carrier will launch flight UA163 from Guam at 0805. It will arrive in Seoul’s Incheon International Airport at 1210. The return leg will see flight UA164 leave South Korea at 2225, arriving back in Guam at 0400 early the following morning.

Finally, for flights between Guam and Shanghai, flight UA131 will depart the island at 1920 to arrive in Pudong at 2200. The return UA130 service will then leave Shanghai at 2310 to arrive back in Guam at 0540 the next morning.
