The carrier will configure the aircraft with 252 seats — 48 in Business First and 204 in economy, including 88 premium economy seats.

The airline's B787-9 fleet comes with pre-installed wifi connectivity. Moving forward, each United B787-8 and B787-10 Dreamliner will arrive equipped with wifi.

United is the North American launch customer for the B787-9.

It has previously announced it will deploy the aircraft on a direct service from Los Angeles to Melbourne, to launch on October 26 (see news, February 21).

Air New Zealand will start flying the B787-9 from Auckland to Perth 11 days earlier on October 15 (see news, November 7).

Ron Baur, United's vice president of fleet, said today: "The 787-9 builds on the Dreamliner's fuel efficiency and customer comfort while giving us even more flexibility and range.

"Last year, our customers gave the 787 the highest customer satisfaction scores of any aircraft in our fleet, and we know they'll enjoy what the 787-9 has to offer."

Last month, United converted seven of its eight remaining B787-8 orders to the extended B787-10 model (see news, August 5).
