Lufthansa to launch A380 service to India

1 Sep 2014 by Alex McWhirter

Lufthansa will inaugurate non-stop A380 flights from Frankfurt to Mumbai and Delhi on October 26.

The superjumbo service to Mumbai will operate flight LH756 departing Frankfurt at 1245 and arriving into Mumbai at 0110. Return service LH757 will leave at 0305 and land back in Frankfurt at 0720.

For Delhi, flight LH760 departs Frankfurt at 1340 and arrives early the next day at 0130. The service will turn around and leave Delhi at 0330 to reach Frankfurt at 0720, reports airlineroute.net.

Mumbai airport has, at the present time, only a single gate that can handle an aircraft the size of an A380 or B747-8 (the latter has a broader wingspan than earlier B747 versions).

Lufthansa, which intended to bring its B747-8 into Mumbai this summer, had been pipped at the post by Emirates.

Mystery surrounds Emirates' A380 service into Mumbai during the winter. According to emirates.com, the daily flight will be downgraded to a B777-300ER. Further details can be found here at India's Business Standard and on our forum here.

So, now that Emirates has withdrawn its A380 the way is clear for Lufthansa and the German carrier's superjumbo is set to become popular with travellers flying to, from or beyond Europe.

Business Standard reports that over 80 per cent of Lufthansa passengers are changing planes on arrival in Germany.

The majority are bound for points in the UK or mainland Europe. Some will continue on long-haul services and especially those to North America.

Lufthansa will become the third carrier to deploy the A380 to India, joining Singapore Airlines as well as Emirates.
