United offers app integration with Uber transport service

21 Aug 2014 by Clement Huang

United Airlines continues to be a pioneer of airline app technology, with the carrier now integrating its mobile application with Uber transportation services.

For those who are unaware of the service, Uber is a dispatch and payment service for taxis and car services. Available in 128 cities across 36 countries, customers that require taxi services can book a ride through the website. Prices are very competitive and there is a wide range of vehicle options available.

Customers that use the app on both iOS and Android mobile devices can now access Uber ground transportation information from the United app menu, or in the “My Reservations” tab.

The app will display the available vehicle options offered by Uber, as well as allow customers to input their pick-up and drop-off locations. They will then be provided with estimated wait times and prices, which will vary based on distance and vehicle type.

Upon selecting their ride, the United app will automatically transfer guests to the Uber website (or app, if the users have it installed on their mobile devices) where they can sign up for an account to complete the transaction.

To promote the use of the service, United is rewarding customers with 1,000 MileagePlus award miles upon completion of their first Uber transaction via the airline’s app.

"Our partnership with Uber offers customers new opportunities to simplify their travel experience," said Praveen Sharma, United's vice president of loyalty. "Customers can use the app to ensure a more convenient journey, from checking in for an international flight from their home or office to finding instant ground transportation options at their final destination".
