United Airlines has installed 20 Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks by BorderXpress to the Terminal C customs hall at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The new APC system is designed to expedite the process through US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) by an average of 89 per cent – according to Vancouver Airport Authority who designed the technology.
Eligible United passengers will be able to scan their passport and complete a customs declaration via a simple touch screen system. A receipt confirming their details will be printed, which they can then take to a CBP officer for final processing.
"This technology will offer our customers shorter wait times, less congestion and faster flight connections," said Don Wright, United's vice president at Newark Liberty.
Usage of the APC kiosks is currently limited to US citizens, Canadians and international travellers who qualify for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). In Asia-Pacific, VWP designated countries include Australia, Japan and Singapore.
The US carrier has rolled out APC kiosks at its hubs in Chicago and Houston over the past year, and will be looking to install an additional ten units at Newark Liberty over the coming weeks.
