Ovolo to open new hotel in Hong Kong

20 Jun 2014 by Clement Huang

Ovolo Hotels will open a new property in Hong Kong later this summer.

Located within a former industrial building, in the manufacturing district of Wong Chuk Hang, the hotel will embody urban chic decor.

Ovolo Southside has been designed by local architectural firm K plus K Associates, who have maintained the buildings original structure whilst creating an edgy, urban interior.

Artwork contributes to urban décor

All rooms are different from one another in size and shape, while the use of steel furniture and heavy-duty fittings creates a distinctive, industrial feel.

Corner deluxe room

Hong Kong’s maiden warehouse-to-hotel converted property offers 162 guestrooms, a 24-hour gym and a collection of social/meeting spaces that feature subtle hints of the hotel’s past role as a warehouse.

Also available is the group’s signature “effortless living” concept, which offers all-inclusive services such as free breakfast and happy hour social drinks daily, as well as self-service laundry facilities and flexible check out.

Bathroom

As seen in another of its properties, Ovolo 100 Shek Pai Wan in Aberdeen, which launched last August (see here), Ovolo Southside will provide guests with free access to over 11,000 wifi hotspots across Hong Kong.

After checking in, guests will be provided with a code to gain access to the service. Wifi hotspots include almost all McDonald's and Starbucks outlets, many shopping malls and can even be found in more remote areas such as Sai Kung, Tai Wo and Yuen Long.

Lift lobby

Within the property itself, Ovolo Southside offers complimentary wifi for all guests, along with an audio-visual system that includes Apple TV and 3D Smart TVs in every room.

Ovolo Southside’s social spaces are meeting facilities that draw inspiration from the gatherings of Communist Party cadres. The B.I.G room for instance is a Mao-style meeting room, which forgoes the conventional boardroom framework in favour of a collection of reclining leather armchairs that can be set in a number of positions, based on guest preference.

Long loft room

For larger gatherings, G.I.G is the hotel’s multimedia events space, which is capable of accommodating up to 375 guests. Located in the former garage of the warehouse, the centrepiece of the room is the original truck turntable.

Finally, Ovolo Southside offers a number of dining options. Cirqle is located on the fourth floor and serves a menu of classic comfort food and desserts. Meanwhile, Lo Lounge comes to life at night with the music by guest DJs and an array of cocktails.

Ovolo Southside is in close proximity to affluent residential areas such as Repulse Bay and Stanley, plus popular attraction Ocean Park is a five-minute drive from the hotel.

With taxis and buses offering the only means to reach the hotel at present, connectivity may be a slight issue. However, an MTR station in Wong Chuk Hang is currently under development, and is expected to open by June 2016.
