Lufthansa will from next month no longer allow its Miles and More frequent flyer programme members to purchase miles.
Members have three years to use their bonus miles after earning them, so not having the option to buy more miles could leave some unable to reach a level where they are worth redeeming.
The airline said in a statement: "The option of being able to buy the miles you are short of for an award flight with a Lufthansa Group airline will only be available for a few more weeks.
"This option will be removed from the Miles & More programme during July 2014."
