Emirates cancels A350 order

11 Jun 2014 by Clement Huang
Airbus has confirmed that Emirates Airline has cancelled its entire order of A350 XWB aircraft. The Gulf carrier first placed the order back in 2007, which consisted of 50 A350-900s and 20 of the larger A350-1000s. Deliveries were scheduled to start in 2019. The closest you might get to "seeing" the Emirates livery on an A350 In a newly released statement, Airbus explained that the cancellation followed ongoing discussions with Emirates about its fleet requirement review. The decision has had significant ramifications to other parties. Rolls-Royce, which manufactures the Trent engine for the A350, has reported that its order book will be reduced by some 3.5 per cent, or £2.6billion, as a result of the cancellation. “While disappointed with this decision, we are confident that the delivery slots which start towards the end of this decade vacated by Emirates will be taken up by other airlines,” said the company. Meanwhile, Airbus stocks took a hit from the announcement, with its shares falling 3.3 per cent. The company has, however, reiterated that it remains confident with its A350 XWB programme, which now has 742 firm orders. With the A350 scheduled to enter service towards the end of the year, the manufacturer states that the aircraft is on track for Type Certification in the coming months. But the Gulf carrier remains a major customer of Airbus, especially with the A380 line. It has 48 of the superjumbos in service and 92 more on order.
