MAS introduces paid upgrades for economy class food

3 Jun 2014 by Clement Huang

Malaysia Airlines has introduced the option of paid upgrades to its complimentary food offering in economy class.

Branded as "MH Gourmet", the offering allows economy passengers to upgrade their complimentary meal to a premium meal package, if ordered in advance.

The aim is to deliver a superior dining experience onboard the airline’s economy cabin. "MH Gourmet" offers a menu of six different meal choices with selections from Malaysian, Western and Japanese cuisine.

Grilled lamb cutlets

Available for a price of RM70 (US$22), passengers can choose from a main course of either braised beef cheeks, grilled lamb cutlets, chicken cordon bleu, skewer of prawn piccata, glazed cod teriyaki style or beef rendang.

The mains are served alongside an appetizer, dessert, chocolates and bread rolls.

Malaysia Airlines is not the first to offer paid upgrades of this sort. KLM has an a la carte option on a limited number of flights from Amsterdam (see here) while Air France offers a la carte on the majority of its long-haul flights (see here)

The "MH Gourmet" concept can be purchased via the carrier’s call centres and ticket offers system wide. It is offered onboard Malaysia Airlines flights from Kuala Lumpur to destinations in Asia, North Asia, India, Middle East, Europe and Australia/New Zealand.

An introductory offer is currently available until July 3, where the premium meals can be purchased for a price of RM49 (US$15).
