Marriott International (Marriott) has acquired Protea Hotels in Africa for some US$200 million.

The deal makes the hospitality group the largest hotel operator on the African continent. It includes ownership of Protea’s sub-brands, African Pride Hotels and Protea Hotel Fire & Ice!.

Protea’s portfolio of hotels are now available for booking through the Marriott website, which the company states accounted for more than 26 per cent of bookings during the first quarter of 2014.

Prior to the acquisition, Marriott had 10 hotels across the African continent. Protea’s addition to its portfolio has added a further 116 properties, boosting the group’s Middle East and African presence to 162 hotels across 18 countries.
