Lufthansa's premium economy to debut this December

20 May 2014 by Clement Huang

Lufthansa has begun accepting bookings for its premium economy class, which will become available from December 10. The airline first revealed its "fourth class" at ITB earlier this year (see here).

The new seats will be available across all flights serviced by the airline’s fleet of Boeing 747-8s, which include those shuttling between its base in Frankfurt and Buenos Aires, Chicago, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Beijing and Washington DC.

After the December debut, Lufthansa plans to introduce premium economy on its Airbus A340-600s in late January next year, on flights linking Munich with Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo. Then in April, the new product will be seen on the airline's A380-800s, which fly from Frankfurt to Johannesburg, New York, Miami, Houston, San Francisco, Shanghai and Singapore.

“We have had an incredible response for our premium economy class since its launch event, particularly from passengers who we are trying to reach with this new offer. The premium economy travel experience will now be even more within reach – up to 50 per cent more personal space at attractive prices and already honoured with an award as a product in the premium segment,” said Jens Bischof, member of the Lufthansa German Airlines board – sales, product and marketing.

Dependent on the aircraft type, the premium economy class cabin will contain 21 to 52 seats. Lufthansa will start the retrofitting process this autumn, with scheduled completion date set for summer 2015.
