Air Asia Group moving to KLIA 2

28 Apr 2014 by Clement Huang

Air Asia Group (AirAsia), consisting of both its flagship brand Air Asia and Air Asia X, will be moving all of its operations to the newly constructed Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA 2) from May 9. The group is currently based in the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang, which is a considerable distance from KLIA.

KLIA 2 is expected to open on May 2, and represents a RM4 billion (US$1.3 billion) investment. Unlike the existing LCCT that only offers basic services, the new facility will feature 80 aerobridges – meaning that most passengers will no longer be bussed out to their flights.

In addition, KLIA 2 will be 257,000sqm, much bigger than the 36,000sqm LCCT. It will consist of 60 departure gates, eight remote stands and a total of 35,000sqm retail space. As the world’s largest purpose-built terminal, KLIA 2 will be able to accommodate up to 45 million passengers annually.

All Air Asia and Air Asia X departures on May 8 will operate out of the LCCT as usual.

Also, several Air Asia X flights that are scheduled to depart in the early morning of May 9 will fly out of LCCT. These include:

Flight D7 236 to Perth – departs 0005

Flight D7 532 to Osaka – departs 0100

Flight D7 512 to Busan – departs 0115

Flight D7 170 to Jeddah – departs 0235

For inbound services to Kuala Lumpur, passengers are reminded to check their flight details prior to boarding as a number of Air Asia (AK) services due to arrive on May 8 will be making their way directly to the new KLIA 2, as opposed to the LCCT.
