SIA and Turkish Airlines expand codeshare services

6 Mar 2014 by GrahamSmith

Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines have agreed to expand their codeshare ties.

The extension, which is subject to regulatory approval, covers destinations beyond both Singapore and Istanbul, while SIA will increase frequency on a seasonal basis between the two cities to six times per week.

The Star Alliance partners have been codesharing on each other's flights between Singapore and Istanbul since February 2009. SIA currently operates four weekly flights on the route while Turkish flies seven weekly services.

From May 1, SIA will add its "SQ" code to Turkish Airlines-operated flights beyond Istanbul to destinations within Turkey, as well as to points in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

And Turkish Airlines will add its "TK" code to SIA-operated flights beyond Singapore to points in south-east Asia and the southwest Pacific.

Mak Swee Wah, SIA's executive vice president commercial, said: "This significant expansion of our partnership with Turkish Airlines, together with our increase in frequency to Istanbul, is in line with ongoing efforts to expand our network reach and to offer customers more travel options."

Dr Ahmet Bolat, Turkish Airlines' chief investment and technology officer, added: "This expansion will serve as an example of Turkish Airlines' target to maximise the travel opportunities offered to passengers through the extensive networks of both airlines.

"With this co-operation we will have the opportunity to transfer our passengers to destinations in Australia, New Zealand and south-east Asia via Singapore by connecting our networks.

"Reciprocally, Singapore Airlines will have the increased chance to transfer its passengers to Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North America via our hub in Istanbul."

Last month, Turkish Airlines opened its expanded and redesigned departures lounge at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport (see news, February 12).
