Hilton Hotels is set to open its second China property under their top-tier Waldorf Astoria brand in the next few months, in Beijing’s Wangfujing district. The other Waldorf Astoria in China is in Shanghai, and has been open since 2010 (see here). Next in the country pipeline is a Chengdu property, which just broke ground.
The 176-unit Waldorf Astoria Beijing enjoys an exceptional landmark location – within walking distance of Tiananmen Square and overlooking the Forbidden City and a 700-year-old hutong neighbourhood. The building, which is the first to ever be completely clad in copper, is about an hours drive from the airport.
The interior decor is sophisticated, incorporating both the brand’s signature elements such as a grandfather clock in the lobby, and site-specific touches such as silk walls that are hand painted and embroidered. There’s an impressive art collection, with pieces from established and up-and-coming Chinese artists. Three of the works are now valued at over RMB3 million (US$495,472).
“There are no big chandeliers hanging in massive lobbies here. It’s more of an understated elegance – like a big home or mansion,” says Marlene Poynder, Waldorf Astoria Beijing general manager.
Premier room
Guestrooms include 55 suites, most of which have spacious, furnished terraces. All rooms are equipped with the expected features, as well as free wifi and Ferragamo amenities. Coming at the end of the year are five hutong accommodation units, separate from the hotel, which have been constructed to original specifications – a process overseen by history professors at Beijing University. These will have private underground parking and entrance, allowing for a discreet entry, as well as garden courtyards. The two-storey Hutong Presidential Villa also has a private courtyard, swimming pool, Jacuzzi and sauna. Below the hutong accommodations will be a meeting and entertainment space, including a 16-seat cinema and a sunken lounge bar.
Inside the main building the meetings and events spaces include a ballroom and four drawing rooms that can accommodate events from eight to 200 people. There are also two 24-hour business centres, a spa, fitness centre, indoor swimming pool and whirlpool and three restaurants. The Waldorf Astoria brand’s signature Peacock Alley venue serves quick meals, while Brasserie 1893 has an open kitchen producing buffet and a la carte menus. Finally, there’s a Chinese Restaurant serving Beijing favourites.
