Emirates details growth plans

25 Oct 2013 by Clement Huang

Emirates Airline expects to fly 70 million passengers in 2020, and will be taking steps to ensure that it has the right infrastructure to support and capitalise on the growth.

At the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) Emirates’ president Tim Clark said: “By 2020, we will have more than 250 aircraft serving some 70 million passengers across six continents. It will make us the largest airline on the planet by international passenger traffic.”

The strategic location of Emirate’s home base in Dubai allows the airline to potentially serve almost 90 per cent of people in the world. Over a third of the word’s population lives within a four-hour flight from Dubai, and two-thirds are within eight-hours from the Gulf city.

Since January 2012, Emirates has operated new services to 20 destinations, and will be launching a further three by the end of the year with flights to Conakry, Sialkot and Kabul (see here).

In anticipation of its growth in the future, the Gulf carrier will also be increasing the size of its fleet. Emirates is currently the world’s largest operator of the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777, and will be bolstering this with a booking for 53 and 64 more of each these two aircraft types respectively.

The airline expects to operate a fleet of over 250 aircraft by 2020.
