Marriott outlines Asia growth plans

16 Oct 2013 by Clement Huang

Marriott International has revealed that it expects to open 135 more properties within the region over the next three years, taking its Asian portfolio to 330 hotels across 16 countries.

The company’s Ritz-Carlton brand continues to expand with new openings this month in Chengdu (see here), Tianjin and Bangalore, while JW Marriotts have opened in Hanoi, Bangalore (see here) and Delhi.

Marriott already operates an extensive portfolio of brands within Asia, including Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, The Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Renaissance, Autograph Collection, Marriott Hotels, Courtyard and Marriott Executive Apartments.

It is however adding even more brands to its Asian collection, with the introduction of Fairfield by Marriott into India, and the anticipated arrival of Edition to Bangkok in 2016. Fairfield represents a new brand launch for the company, with 12 hotels signed for India, and additional properties under construction in Indonesia and Nepal.

To meet this growth, Marriott expects to add about 41,000 trained associates to Asia, which will double its current workforce in the region to more than 80,000 by 2017. Half of this number will be based in China, which remains the company’s biggest market in Asia. Marriott currently has 61 open properties in China, and has signed contracts for an additional 89 hotels over the next three years. The Ritz-Carlton brand alone is expected to increase by 20 new properties by 2016 (see here).
