Four airlines move terminals at Changi

23 Sep 2013 by Clement Huang

Changi Airport Group (CAG) has announced that four airlines will move their operations to new terminals at Changi Airport. The changes are being made in order to optimise capacity utilisation across the airport’s three terminals.

From September 30, Asiana Airlines will move its operations base from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3. Then on October 18, Indonesia’s largest privately run airline Lion Air will cease its operations at Terminal 1 and move to Terminal 3. Finally, Philippine Airlines and PAL Express will move from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1.

Robin Goh, a public relations representative at CAG said that maneuvering airline operations to maximise their growth potential is in Changi Airport's best interests since it ensures that its infrastructure continues to adequately support the airlines.

The recent expansion of the Air Services Agreement inked between Singapore and Indonesia is expected to bring an increase of more than 30 per cent in seat capacity between the countries. In addition, carriers such as Singapore Airlines (see here and here), Air Asia, PAL (see here) and Lion Air have all placed in orders for new aircraft, thereby increasing the need for a larger base of operations.

CAG will be assisting with the transition by providing signs around the terminals, and additional manpower will be deployed to ensure that passengers are directed to the correct terminal and check-in row for their flights.

As one of the busiest airports in the world, Changi will be expanding over the coming years with the construction of Terminal 4 and the extension of Terminal 1 (as part of Project Jewel – see here). The group hopes to increase terminal capacity to 85 million passengers per annum by 2018.
