Chengdu introduces 72-hour visa

23 Sep 2013

Chengdu has this month become the fourth Chinese city to allow visa-free entry for foreign travellers, following Shanghai, Beijing (see here) and Guangzhou (see here).

The policy applies to visitors from 45 countries, including Britain, the US, France and Singapore.

Travellers holding third-country visas and connecting air tickets can enjoy up to 72 hours of city exploration without the need for a visa. This only applies to direct transit passengers flying to Chengdu on international routes.

Under the policy, visitors using the visa are not allowed to leave the city during the transit period. Otherwise, they may be warned, fined, detained or expelled from China and prohibited re-entry.

Qatar Airways (see here) and British Airways (see here) have recently launched flights to Chengdu.
