Iberia launches new fare structure

13 Sep 2013 by GrahamSmith

Iberia has launched a new three-way fare structure on its domestic and European routes.

The redesign sees fares split into three groups — Basic, Classic and Flexible — and affects nearly all destinations in Spain and Europe served by Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum.

Basic is for economy passengers who want the cheapest fare and are only carrying hand luggage.

Classic allows each passenger to bring one piece of luggage and offers a choice of seating and the facility to change your ticket, for a fee.

Those with Flexible fares are not penalised for changes, can get a refund on their tickets for a a fee, and are given priority when boarding.

The new fares came into effect on September 7.

Marco Sansavini, Iberia's commercial director, said: "With this change in the fare model we are meeting the expectations and needs of our customers, who may now choose the price and service levels that suit them best.

"Thus we expect to enlarge our customer base, generate additional revenues, and be able to compete in a market that is evolving at an extraordinary pace."

A summary of the three fares can be seen below.

Basic

  • The most economical
  • Lower fares than the cheapest previously available
  • Hand luggage only
  • No changes or refunds

Classic

  • Includes one piece of checked luggage and choice of seat
  • Changes allowed

Flexible

  • Includes one piece of checked luggage and choice of seat
  • No penalty for changes or refunds
  • Priority when boarding

In July, Iberia ecame the world's first airline to allow passengers to download and print their own luggage tags from its website (see news, July 9).
