Yinchuan is an agricultural centre, with main crops traditionally being Chinese wolfberry, wheat, apple and rice. It also has the potential to become a future wine capital: its climate and terroir have attracted the attention of international wine growers, and French company Moet Hennessy has launched a project to produce sparkling wine there, with the first bulk slated to hit the shelves some time next year.
The city was also the capital of Western Xia Dynasty (1038 to 1227 AD), and the imperial tombs left from that era are tourist attractions. Its ancient pagodas, rock carvings and desert lakes are also popular sites.
In 2012, the city’s GDP had reached RMB114 billion (US$1.8 billion).
