Air transport IT and communications specialist organisation SITA has announced that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) will be introducing its new flight management system "FMS Wind Uplink" on 40 aircraft, including its A380s.
The service helps airlines reduce fuel costs by constantly updating key FMS calculations, so that an aircraft can adjust its flight plan according to changing wind and weather conditions, selecting the most fuel- and cost-efficient route. According to SITA, trials for the service showed savings of up to 600kg of fuel on a single flight sector.
“[the FMS service] has helped improve our final fuel on board predictions and made our estimated time of arrival predictions more accurate,” MAS representatives confirmed.
Boeing also launched a similar series of subscription offerings in 2010, which it branded “Inflight Optimisation Services”.
