British Airways resumes Nairobi service

9 Aug 2013 by GrahamSmith

British Airways is today resuming its service to Nairobi, two days a devastating fire closed Kenya's main international airport.

The airline was forced to cancel flights between London Heathrow and Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday and Thursday.

But BA has now revealed its Nairobi route is open again, although it warned passengers to expect delays.

In a statement, the carrier said: "Our flights to and from Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kenya, are resuming today.

The airport authority has put in place temporary facilities, however customers are likely to experience significant disruption on arrival and departure."

It added that customers travelling to Nairobi with an onward flight must confirm with the carrier that this flight is still operating and that "any customer travelling without a confirmed onward flight do so at their own risk"

BA advised passengers travelling from Nairobi to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport no later than three hours before departure "to ensure there is sufficient time to check in and clear security and immigration".

Lounge facilities at Nairobi are not available.

The cause of the fire at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is unknown, but it is thought to have begun at around 0500 local time on Wednesday in the arrivals and immigration area (see online news, August 7).

Kenya Airways has stepped up its return to a normal schedule at the airport by increasing its international flights from six on Thursday to 31 on Friday.

It said in a statement: "After 48 hours of concerted recovery efforts following the fire that destroyed parts of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kenya Airways wishes to announce that we are now scaling up towards full operation of our local flights."
