Korean Air aircraft overshoots runway in Niigata, Japan

6 Aug 2013

A Korean Air B737-900 carrying 106 passengers and nine crew members from Seoul overshot the runway at Niigata Airport in Japan on Monday evening, at 1941 local time.

The incident occurred after the plane had already landed, and all passengers are unharmed and the aircraft did not sustain any damage, Mihyun Kim from corporate communications at Korean Air confirmed to Business Traveller Asia-Pacific. Buses were used to disembark the passengers from the stranded B737.

Whether the fault was the cause of human or mechanical error is currently undergoing investigation, Kim said, and the results will determine if and when the aircraft can resume operations.

Meanwhile, the daily Seoul–Niigata service will continue as usual. The aircraft involved in the incident was not at full capacity – 104 of the 179 available economy seats were occupied, as well as two out of eight business.
