Hong Kong Airlines to fly to Xiamen

5 Apr 2013 by ReggieHo

Hong Kong Airlines is set to fly to Xiamen on May 15.

The carrier, with a 28-strong fleet, serves mostly East Asia and Southeast Asia. The new service will be operated daily by an Airbus 320 aircraft with eight business class seats and 144 in economy. The flight HX261 from Hong Kong will depart at 2235 to arrive in Xiamen at 2350, and the return leg, HX262, will leave at 0830 the next day for a 0945 arrival. Other airlines serving this route are Dragonair and Xiamen Airlines.

The coastal Chinese city of Xiamen has a fascinating history of being one of the five treaty ports opened up for trade in mid-19th century, and then a heavily guarded frontier when cross-strait relations were tense, as the Taiwanese island of Jinmen is only 10 km away. Gulangyu Island, an outlying island minutes away by ferry, still has many hundred-year-old houses from days of foreign settlements. The seaside location and the temperate climate of the city have made it popular with tourists, as well as for meeting and incentive groups.

Xiamen has various industrial zones for, among others, logistics and high-tech companies. It is served by Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, which is being expanded. For more on this fast-developing city, click here for our Inside China report.
