Qatar Airways to expand Iraq services

20 Mar 2013 by BusinessTraveller

Qatar Airways is to expand services to Iraq this summer, with new routes to Basra and Sulaymaniyah.

Flights to Basra will launch on June 3, with services to Sulaymaniyah following on August 20.

Both routes will operate four times-weekly, using Airbus A320 aircraft configured for 12 seats in business class and 132 in economy.

The new services are in addition to Qatar’s existing routes to Baghdad, Erbil and most recently Najaf (see online news September 25, 2012), and will increase the carrier’s frequencies to Iraq to 20 flights per week.

Commenting on the news the airline’s CEO Akbar Al Baker said:

"After years of restricted air access for foreign airlines in many parts of Iraq, Qatar Airways has been working with the authorities to open up services and are delighted to have expanded our operations there in such a short space of time, doing our bit in the country’s rebuilding efforts.”
