Air Asia X offers Red Carpet Service in Kuala Lumpur

27 Feb 2013

AirAsia X, the long haul arm of Malaysia-based low-cost carrier AirAsia, has announced it will roll out the "Red Carpet Service" for passengers departing from the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) of Kuala Lumpur International Airport. For the airline, it will open up a new channel for ancillary revenues.

The new optional service includes a dedicated check-in counter, priority baggage tagging and loading, access to the Plaza Premium Lounge at the LCCT, fast-track immigration and security clearance as well as priority baggage delivery upon arrival.

AirAsia X passengers can book this service for RM100 (US$32) online or, for RM125 (US$40), at the airport's Red Carpet counters, numbered S25 and S26. When flights are disrupted or delayed, passengers are entitled to a full refund of the Red Carpet Service fee or the option of transferring it to the next available flight.

This new service, announced shortly after the carrier launched “Quiet Zones” restricted for passengers above 12 years old (see story here), reflects how LCCs in Asia have to get creative to compete and increase revenues. Other examples include Cebu Pacific, which now offers wifi onboard (see story here), Scoot which provides travel insurance (see story here) and rentable iPads for inflight entertainment (see story here). Stay tuned for a detailed look at LCCs in the region in the Business Traveller Asia-Pacific March 2013 issue.
