Marriott International recently penned an agreement to open a 700-room hotel in Dhaka – which will be the largest five-star property in Bangladesh.
The hotel will be housed in a mixed-use development that will also contain retail outlets and offices. Construction of this building is already underway, but Marriott are unable to pinpoint an exact opening date at the moment.
The hotel will also consist of three restaurants, two bars, a spa and 2,280 sqm of meeting space.
“Bangladesh has a thriving economy and the country’s GDP has been growing at approximately 6 per cent a year for the past five years,” said Simon Cooper, Marriott International’s president and managing director in Asia-Pacific.
The city is becoming a hub for manufacturing, and many international retail, garment, energy and telecommunications companies, including WalMart, JC Penney, Marks & Spencer, Halliburton, CK, BP, Shell, Exxon Mobil, Motorola, Ericsson and Siemens are establishing offices in Dhaka.
The hotel will also be located very close to the airport, which connects the city directly to India, the Middle East and South East Asia through more than 30 international airlines.
Le Méridien will be the next international brand to enter the city this year (see story here).
